Scalp Cooling Kit Cold Capping for Reliable Comfort
Cold capping (also known as scalp cooling) is a method used to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy. It works by lowering the temperature of the scalp before, during, and after chemo infusion. The cold constricts blood vessels in the scalp, reducing the amount of chemotherapy drugs that reach the hair follicles.
Developed with Australian medical experts and used extensively throughout Europe and around the world for over 10 years, the Arctic Heat cooling cap supports some chemotherapy patients by reducing hair loss (alopecia). Experience effective, portable cooling — always consult a medical professional before use as scalp cooling is not suitable for all patients.
The Arctic Heat cooling cap is portable — a patient can wear one cap on the way to treatment, swap to a second cold cap during treatment, and swap again after. They can then leave the treatment room and wear a cap on the way home. After research, many find Arctic Heat caps a significantly more affordable alternative to renting machine-based cooling equipment.
How cold capping works
- The activated Arctic Heat cooling cap is placed on the head
- Scalp temperature drops significantly
- Vasoconstriction and reduced metabolic activity protect hair follicles from chemotherapy drugs
Scalp cooling is not suitable for everyone
It is not recommended for:
- Hematological cancers such as melanoma, leukemia and lymphoma — high risk of scalp metastasis
- People requiring very high doses of chemotherapy
- Continuous chemotherapy via pump over several days
- Patients with impaired liver function (drugs may circulate longer)
- People with severe migraines
Always consult your oncologist or medical team before starting scalp cooling.
How to use for scalp cooling
Your scalp needs to be kept cold for the full period that chemotherapy drugs are circulating — approximately 30–40 minutes before infusion begins, throughout treatment, and 30–40 minutes after infusion ends.
- Soak caps in water for 5–10 minutes until gel pockets swell firm (not bursting)
- Gently twist to remove excess water; vigorously towel dry inside and out
- Hang inside-out until completely dry
- Freeze for 2–3 hours before treatment (if stiff when removed, leave to soften briefly)
- Transport caps to treatment in a cooler bag with ice
- Apply cap 45–60 minutes before infusion begins (pre-cooling time)
- Swap caps after maximum 1–1.5 hours — do this quickly to avoid vessel dilation
- Continue wearing for 45–60 minutes after infusion ends (post-cooling time)
- Depending on drug and infusion time, 2–5 caps per session will be needed
How effective is scalp cooling?
Scalp cooling can reduce or prevent hair loss for many patients, but results vary. Some people experience thinning rather than complete loss. Hair loss from chemotherapy is almost always temporary — most patients have a full head of hair within 3–6 months of completing treatment, though texture or colour may differ initially.
What is not covered by scalp cooling
Scalp cooling only protects scalp hair. Body hair including eyelashes, eyebrows, and facial hair may still be lost.
Activation and care
When gel pockets begin to dehydrate and flatten, repeat the activation soak. Store activated caps hanging in a ventilated area — do not store in a fridge. Hand wash with warm water and mild soap for no more than 2 minutes. Hang to dry.
Please note: Gel crystals are non-toxic, non-absorbable, and non-irritating to skin and mucous membranes.
